Nissan GT-R Becomes Fastest Fire-Fighter At The Nurburgring

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The ultimate fire-fighting vehicle is ready for the ’ring.

•Mighty Nissan GT-R takes up role as emergency response vehicle at the Nürburgring, Germany

•Nissan donated the ultra-rapid response emergency vehicle to Nürburgring GmbH

•Unique fire-fighter equipment designed and installed by M&M Automotive in Germany

•Even with 200kg of extra equipment on board, GT-R still laps the 'ring in less than 8 minutes

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The ultimate fire-fighting vehicle is ready for the ’ring. Nissan has presented a specially redesigned GT-R to Nürburgring GmbH, providing the fastest possible response to emergency situations at Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

Equipped with a fire extinguishing system with water and foam on board attached to a hose pipe accessed via the sizeable trunk, this GT-R is designed to get to the scene of a fire in the quickest possible time.

In standard road-car form, the GT-R is capable of lapping the famous Nordschleife in only 7 mins 26 seconds 70, making it the perfect car for the Nürburgring’s emergency services. Even with the extra 200kg of fire fighting equipment on board, the GT-R can still lap the challenging circuit in less than 8 minutes – the benchmark time for very fast road cars.

When hundreds of amateur drivers take on the rollercoaster circuit in Germany’s Eifel region during public test drives, accidents are all too common. With over 12 miles of tarmac to cover, getting to the scene of a blaze in a bulky fire truck takes valuable time, so the GT-R will provide fire fighters with an invaluable new safety tool.

“It’s partly thanks to the gracious co-operation of the staff at the Nordschleife circuit that the GT-R is such a thoroughly capable and well developed car” commented Hirotaka Mima, Passenger Vehicles Brand Manager at Nissan Middle East.

“Through its development and testing the GT-R has become synonymous with the Nordschleife circuit and so the donation of this special fast response fire-fighting version is an appropriate gesture in return from Nissan.”

The redesigned GT-R is a gift from Nissan to the Nürburgring operator in thanks for the company’s collaboration in developing the 485 bhp supercar.

The fire-fighting conversion was carried out by M&M Automotive, a Bonn-based specialist for car development and motor sports. The GT-R’s two standard backseats were taken out and replaced with a 50-litre water tank, which was secured with a roll cage.

There is a medium-pressure extinguisher system (20 bars) as well as a winding device for the hose.

The only other differences between this GT-R and one straight from the factory is the additional radio communication system, the new Recaro sports seats and the roll bar.

With a foam reach of around 18 metres and a 20-metre hose, the unit will be able to fight fire for around two minutes on one tank.

The GT-R Nürburgring rapid response service vehicle was presented by Michael Bierdümpfl, Director of Communication at Nissan Center Europe GmbH, to Dr. Walter Kafitz, Managing Director of Nürburgring GmbH on August 14th.

The fire fighting GT-R can now be seen at the race track entrance.

Lap time of 7min 26 seconds 70 recorded on April 23 2009.

Nissan Unveils (LEAF) – The World's First Electric Car Designed For Affordability And Real-World Requirements

Yokohama and Dubai- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has unveiled Nissan LEAF, the world's first affordable, zero-emission car.

- Event ushers in a new era for Nissan and a new era for mobility -

Yokohama and Dubai-Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has unveiled Nissan LEAF, the world's first affordable, zero-emission car.

Designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, Nissan LEAF is a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults and has a range of more than 160km (100 miles) to satisfy real-world consumer requirements.

NISSAN LEAF

Slated for launch in late 2010 in Japan, the United States, and Europe, Nissan LEAF ushers in a new era of mobility - the zero-emission era.

The car is the embodiment of Nissan's radical, transformative vision for the future and the culmination of decades of investment and research.

"Nissan LEAF is a tremendous accomplishment - one in which all Nissan employees can take great pride," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. "We have been working tirelessly to make this day a reality - the unveiling of a real-world car that has zero - not simply reduced - emissions.

It's the first step in what is sure to be an exciting journey - for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry."

Key characteristics of the LEAF include:

1) Zero-emission power train and platform

2) Affordable pricing

3) Distinctive design

4) Real-world range autonomy - 160km (100 miles)

5) Connected Mobility: Advanced intelligent transportation (IT) system

The "LEAF" name is a significant statement about the car itself.

Just as leaves purify the air in nature, so Nissan LEAF purifies mobility by taking emissions out of the driving experience. Pricing details will be announced closer to start of sales in late 2010; however, the company expects the car to be competitively priced in the range of a well-equipped C-segment vehicle.

Additionally, Nissan LEAF is expected to qualify for an array of significant local, regional and national tax breaks and incentives in markets around the world.

As an added benefit, because the vehicle has less mechanical complexity than a traditional gasoline-powered car, Nissan LEAF is designed to be friendly to the wallet as well as to the environment.

ZERO-EMISSION MOBILITY

Nissan LEAF is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries, which generate power output of over 90kW, while its electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm.

This ensures a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered automobiles.

Unlike internal-combustion engine (ICE) equipped vehicles, Nissan LEAF's power train has no tail pipe, and thus no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases.

A combination of Nissan LEAF's regenerative braking system and innovative lithium-ion battery packs enables the car to deliver a driving range of more than 160km (100 miles) on one full charge*. (*US LA4 mode)

Extensive consumer research demonstrates that this range satisfies the daily driving requirements of more than 70% of the world's consumers who drive cars.

And, Nissan's approach makes charging easy and convenient. Nissan LEAF can be charged up to 80% of its full capacity in just under 30 minutes with a quick charger.

Charging at home through a 200V outlet is estimated to take approximately eight hours - ample time to enable an overnight refresh for consumer and car alike.

REAL-WORLD CAR

The engineers and designers behind Nissan LEAF worked to create a competitively priced real-world car that would enable Nissan to lead mobility into the zero-emission era.

To ensure comfort, spaciousness and cargo capacity, Nissan LEAF employs a completely new chassis and body layout.

"Our car had to be the world's first, medium-size, practical EV that motorists could afford and would want to use every day. And that's what we've created. The styling will identify not only Nissan LEAF but also the owner as a participant in the new era of zero-emission mobility," said Masato INOUE, Product Chief Designer.

DISTINCTIVE DESIGN

Even the smallest details can yield tremendous effect.

Nissan LEAF's frontal styling is characterized by a sharp, upright V-shaped design featuring long, up-slanting light-emitting diode (LED) headlights that employ a blue internal reflective design that announces, "This car is special."

But the headlights do more than make a statement.

They are also designed to cleverly split and redirect airflow away from the door mirrors, thus reducing wind noise and drag.

And, the headlights provide yet one more benefit in that they consume just 10 percent of the electricity of conventional lamps, which helps Nissan LEAF to achieve its world-class range autonomy.

Through bright trim colors inside, Nissan LEAF creates a pleasing and stylish cabin environment. An environmentally friendly "blue earth" color theme originates from the Aqua Globe body color of Nissan LEAF's introductory model. This theme is carried into the interior through blue dashboard highlights and instrument illumination.

CONNECTED MOBILITY IT SYSTEM

Nissan LEAF employs an exclusive advanced IT system. Connected to a global data center, the system can provide support, information, and entertainment for drivers 24 hours a day.

The dash-mounted monitor displays Nissan LEAF's remaining power - or "reachable area" - in addition to showing a selection of nearby charging stations.

Another state-of-the-art feature is the ability to use mobile phones to turn on air-conditioning and set charging functions - even when Nissan LEAF is powered down.

An on-board remote-controlled timer can also be pre-programmed to recharge batteries.

"The IT system is a critical advantage," says Tooru ABE, Chief Product Specialist. "We wanted this vehicle to be a partner for the driver and an enhancement for the passengers. We also wanted this vehicle to help create a zero-emission community, and these IT features will help make that possible."

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ZERO-EMISSION MOBILITY AND ECO-FRIENDLY INNOVATION

Nissan LEAF is a critical first step in establishing the era of zero-emission mobility; however, Nissan recognizes that internal-combustion engine (ICE) technologies will play a vital role in global transportation for decades to come.

Because of this, Nissan is implementing its zero-emission vision through a holistic approach, which provides consumers a comprehensive range of eco-friendly technologies from which to choose.

For some consumers, Nissan LEAF will be the perfect match, and the only car they will ever need. For others, Nissan LEAF will be a logical addition to the family fleet - the optimal choice for the daily commute, for example.

While zero-emission is the ultimate goal, the company is committed to ongoing innovation in eco-friendly technologies that increase efficiency and reduce emissions.

As a result, Nissan offers a comprehensive suite of automotive technologies, including CVT, Idle Stop, HEV, Clean Diesel, and ongoing research and investment in FCV technology.

WORLDWIDE PARTNERS

Zero-emission mobility programs under the banner of the Renault-Nissan Alliance include partnerships with countries such as the UK and Portugal, local governments in the Japan and the USA, and other sectors, for a total of nearly 30 partnerships worldwide.

In these partnerships major efforts focus on three areas:

1) Development of a comprehensive charging infrastructure through public and private investment

2) Incentives and subsidies from local, regional, and national governments

3) Public education on the individual and societal benefits of zero-emissions mobility.

ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLE PRODUCTION

Nissan LEAF is the first in the company's forthcoming line of EVs and is a major milestone in the realization of the Renault-Nissan Alliance's vision for zero-emission mobility.

The first of Nissan's EV's will be manufactured at Oppama, Japan, with additional capacity planned for Smyrna, Tennessee, USA. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries are being produced in Zama, Japan, with additional capacity planned for the USA, the UK and Portugal, and other sites for investment are under study around the world.

Nissan Introduces New Dual Injector System for Improved Fuel Efficiency in Small-Displacement Engines

United Arab Emirates, Dubai: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the development of a Dual Injector system designed to improve fuel efficiency in small-displacement gasoline engines.

United Arab Emirates, Dubai: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the development of a Dual Injector system designed to improve fuel efficiency in small-displacement gasoline engines.

The new fuel delivery system, the first of its kind in the world*1, uses an injector for each port rather than one per cylinder – speeding up fuel vaporization, reducing the amount of unburned fuel and reducing hydrocarbon emissions. Nissan will introduce the new system in production vehicles starting early in fiscal 2010.

Dual Injector

“Nissan is constantly researching a wide range of technologies which will offer consumers improved fuel economy and cleaner exhaust emissions in the future” commented Monal Zeidan, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Communications at Nissan Middle East.

“This Dual Injector engine technology is just one example of the many innovative solutions of the company is currently exploring”.

Since no one can fully anticipate customer preferences, we decided to invest in a portfolio of transitional technologies to make sure we meet all our customer demands,” commented Monal Zeidan, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Communications at Nissan Middle East.

While most current gasoline engines utilize one injector per cylinder (furnishing fuel to two intake ports), the new Nissan Dual Injector system doubles the number of injectors per cylinder. This reduces the diameter of the fuel droplets by about 60%, resulting in smoother, more stable combustion.

Fuel Injection Comparison

(Left: One port of the Dual Injector Right: Conventional system injecting to both ports)

The system also adds continuous valve timing control on the exhaust side to conventional intake-side control, improving heat efficiency, reducing pumping losses and raising fuel efficiency by up to 4%*2 in sync with the dual injectors.

While similar in theory to "direct-injection” systems, which also inject fuel directly into cylinders, such direct injection systems are difficult to use on small-displacement engines because they require a high-pressure pump that complicates system design, making component layout less cost-efficient.

In contrast, the Nissan Dual Injector system is lighter and structurally simpler because it furnishes fuel at normal pressures, reducing cost by about 60% compared to direct-injection engines of similar displacement.

The new Dual Injector system also uses half the amount of rare metals in the catalyzer while maintaining the efficiency of the catalytic conversion system.

That number could potentially be reduced to 75% in combination with the ultralow-rare-metal catalysts that were introduced in 2008.

"We consider it important to further improve the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines as demand for gasoline and other internal-combustion systems continues to increase around the world,” said Shuichi Nishimura, Corporate Vice President, Nissan Powertrain Engineering Division.

“By widely applying the Dual Injector system on small-displacement engines, we hope to help reduce CO2 emissions and conserve rare metals."

Nissan has been addressing a wide range of actions under "Blue Citizenship," which represents the company's desire to protect the blue planet and to be a corporate citizen that can live symbiotically with people and society.

These efforts range from such global issues as the environmental protection to contribution to communities, promoting diversity and making personal mobility available to as many people as possible.

Nissan continues promoting the "Nissan Green Program 2010," based on the "Blue Citizenship" spirit by introducing effective technologies, products and services into the market.

The architecture is energetic and modern, with an accent on natural materials and warm furnishings. IREDI facilities are already operational in Kuwait City with further launches planned in Abu Dhabi, Oman and Azerbaijan in the near future.

The IREDI Centre concept is where Japanese luxury meets Japan’s renowned reputation for premium service. Infiniti calls this the Total Ownership Experience.

As the name suggests, this ethos which is central to the brand is not just applied at the time of purchase.

It also extends throughout the whole period of ownership with many benefits including collection and delivery of an Infiniti for servicing, and a mobility service that covers the owner whatever vehicle he or she might be in.

NV200: Nissan’s new global van makes European debut at Barcelona Motor Show

Dubai – United Arab Emirates- The van version of Nissan’s global NV200 has been unveiled at the Barcelona International Motor show in Spain.

Sales will start in Europe in October 2009

Dubai – United Arab Emirates- The van version of Nissan’s global NV200 has been unveiled at the Barcelona International Motor show in Spain.

Initially, the NV200 will be assembled in Japan for the European market, until production starts at Nissan’s plant in Barcelona in November 2009.

Sales of NV200 van and combi version will start from October 2009 in most European markets, while the Family version will be available in 2010.

“We are delighted to display the Van version of NV200 at this year’s Barcelona International Motor Show. It is a vehicle that will have a strong association with Barcelona once production starts at our factory here later this year,” said Simon Thomas, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing, Nissan Europe.

NV200 uses innovative packaging ideas to create the largest and most practical cargo area in its class. Although a little under 4.4m in overall length, the van version of the NV200 has a load bay that’s more than 2m long (2040mm).

With front-wheel drive and the adoption of a highly compact rear suspension system, the NV200 can house two standard Euro pallets in the cargo area at a time. At 1.84m high NV200 is no taller than its rivals, while at 520mm from ground level, the floor itself is the lowest in the class to ease loading, helping to boost the cargo volume to 4.1m3. Maximum payload is 771kg.

Performance comes from a choice of two engines, one petrol and one diesel.

The petrol version will be powered by Nissan’s renowned all aluminium 1.6-litre HR16 engine. Displacing 1,598cc, the 16-valve unit develops 79kW (108PS) and 153Nm of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The diesel is Alliance partner Renault’s acclaimed 8-valve 1.5 dCi (K9K) 1,461cc engine. Developing 200 Nm of torque and 63kW (86PS), it offers an ideal blend of performance, refinement and fuel economy. Power is transmitted through a five-speed gearbox.

The NV200 is available with an optional rear view parking camera, a first for a van in this segment, while the cabin is full of storage spaces, pockets and cup/bottle holders. There is also a secret storage space large enough to hide camera, mobile phones or vital documents within the upper portion of the glove box.

Joining the parking camera, other car-like items of standard or optional equipment include features such as Nissan’s Intelligent Key, power windows and ESP. Safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes with brake assist (BA) and electronic brake force distribution (EBD) as standard. Driver and passenger airbags are also standard with side bags available as an option.

Cost of ownership is projected to be the lowest in class, thanks in part to the low running costs and high efficiency of the engines and drive trains, plus the safety structure which helps to minimise crash damage to vulnerable under bonnet parts such as the radiator.

The NV200 offers outstanding cargo space and class-leading cost of ownership. It also offers new references for performance for manoeuvrability, driveability and load accessibility as well as an attractive design. With these credentials, NV200 is the smartest choice for entrepreneurs who use their vehicles in a busy urban environment,” said Simon Thomas.

““The NV200 is suited to meet the particular unmet needs of our customers and will break the current segment references” concluded Thomas.

THE NEW 2009 INFINITI G37 SEDAN

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (26 May, 2009) - It was the unwritten rule for many years that to build a successful four-door sports sedan you need to have a German badge on the trunk lid.

WHERE POWER, STYLE AND PERFORMANCE MEET EXCLUSIVITY

Bigger engine, new seven speed automatic transmission for 2009

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (26 May, 2009) - It was the unwritten rule for many years that to build a successful four-door sports sedan you need to have a German badge on the trunk lid.

But just 2 years ago, all that changed when the Infiniti brand launched its first generation G sedan into the Middle East luxury car market. Now, for the 2009 model year, Infiniti unveils an updated version of the second generation ‘G’ with a new powertrain combination that is sure to keep it top of the class.

At a glance

•On sale January 2009

•Potent new ‘VQ37VHR’ 3.7-litre 24v V6 engine producing 350bhp (gross)/330bhp (net) is the most powerful normally aspirated V6 engine in the small premium sedan segment

• Advanced 7-speed automatic transmission now standard

•3.7-litre engine already nominated as one of 2008’s 10 Best Engines according to Wardsauto.com

• Vibrant and sophisticated styling

• Rear-wheel drive driving dynamics

• High level of passive occupant safety with six airbags

Overview

Ironically, it’s the success of models from the established German premium brands that have made the Infiniti G sedan an increasingly popular choice as buyers seek an alternative luxury sedan that reflects their own desire to express individuality.

“The Infiniti G37 sedan competes in one of the toughest sectors in the luxury car market but not only does this new version match or better the establishment when it comes to style, dynamic performance, equipment levels, value, and the entire ownership experience…..it also has genuine exclusivity on its side” commented Abhijeet Pandit, General Manager, Infinti Business Unit Middle East.

Infiniti G37 is a credible, confident challenger delivering substantial performance –– and rear-drive dynamics in a convincingly individual package.

“The typical buyer of a G37 is a free thinker, someone who appreciates quality and service and who doesn’t want to follow convention,” continued Pandit.

G37 Sedan in detail

Exterior styling

With its long bonnet, long wheelbase and short overhangs, the G37 blurs the boundaries between a four-door saloon and coupé.

As well as providing a classic silhouette, the long bonnet is a visual reference to the G37’s ‘front midship’ engine location: the compact V6 is front-mounted, but as low and as far back as possible, with most of the block behind the front axle line. The result lowers the centre of gravity and helps to deliver the optimum front to rear weight distribution.

The low nose flows, via a curving roofline, to a high trunk to provide a feeling of motion even when the car is static. This is accentuated by a strong rising beltline, the flowing C-pillar and the muscular rear wheel arches.

To the front, the L-shaped headlamps and double-arch grille – complete with sculpted “twisted” horizontal blades inspired by traditional Japanese swords – have become Infiniti design elements helping to give the brand a distinctive face.

At the rear the distinctive wraparound LED tail-lights are another Infiniti signature design.

A neat, upswept spoiler integrated into the boot lid contributes to zero lift aerodynamics over the rear axle and completes the sporting look.

The overall effect combines obvious sporting potential with an understated sophistication that together capture the essence of the Infiniti brand.

Interior environment

The G37’s interior is an environment designed to appeal to driver and passengers alike. Quality materials provide the warmth and comfort expected in a premium car, yet the driver’s quarters have a ‘scooped-out’ design to emphasise the concept of a cockpit in direct contrast to the open, spacious design of the passenger area.

The dashboard and centre console adopts Infiniti design DNA with a ‘double wave’ upper section linked to a central vertical spine for a feeling of solidity.

With roots in Japanese design, ‘Washi-style’ aluminium accents can be found through the cabin. Washi is a form of elegant Japanese handmade paper and textured aluminium trim inserts can be found on the centre console, the instrument binnacle and the door panels.

Optional extras are few thanks to the generous level of standard specification. African Rosewood inserts can be adopted on the center console, instrument panel and doors.

A power sliding tinted glass sunroof with one touch open/close, tilt function and sunshade can be specified as can the Infinti DVD-based touch screen navigation system and Bluetooth® hands-free phone system.

At 2,850mm, the wheelbase is longer than its key rivals which translates directly into class-leading interior space for rear passengers.

Engine and powertrain

Infiniti’s latest 3.7-litre V6 is a potent, high revving, 24-valve twin cam unit producing 350bhp (gross) or 330bhp (net) at 7,000 rpm and an impressive 39 kg-m of torque at 5,200 rpm.

This is the second application of this 3.7-litre engine in the Infiniti Middle East product line up following the first introduction of a higher tuned version of the engine in the G37 coupe in July 2008.

Constructed from lightweight aluminium, the engine features a two-part bed-plate construction which is more rigid than a single piece casting for reduced vibration levels.

The ‘VQ37HR’ unit, as it’s internally coded at Infinti, features VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology to optimise efficiency and, in turn, the balance between power, response, fuel efficiency and emissions.

By continually altering valve lift and therefore the quantity of air in the combustion chamber it provides a more powerful combustion phase to increase torque and power. Best of all, as the valves control the intake rather than a conventional butterfly, response to throttle inputs is immediate.

The result is a more efficient combustion to the benefit of fuel economy and lower emissions compared to standard valve lift systems

Precise mapping of the engine control unit (ECU), meanwhile, helps the engine provide a progressive ‘swell’ of power and torque, providing a ‘building wave’ of acceleration rather than a peaky power delivery.

In keeping with the performance profile of a sports sedan, Infiniti engineers have developed a distinctive aural soundtrack for the car. Equal length tubular exhaust manifolds and a symmetrical exhaust and silencer system have allowed the engineers to create a linear sound with a good balance between low and high frequency notes.

Mated to this new, bigger engine is Infiniti’s latest 7-speed automatic transmission that replaces the former 5-speed automatic and continues with Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and magnesium paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel for sporty driving.

Compared to the old 5-speed, the 7-speed automatic has significantly shorter 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear ratios to add to the responsive nature of the car plus an overdrive 7th gear for relaxed cruising.

And like the previous 5-speed automatic, it matches revs on downshifts and can be controlled via the magnesium paddle shifters.

Transmission shift points are tuned to keep the engine in the largest part of the torque curve, ensuring there is always a healthy reserve when the driver wants to overtake.

The linked Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) system switches between three different programs depending on input from the major control systems throughout the car.

Chassis and driving dynamics

Using the second generation version of FM platform, the G37 sedan has an excellent front to rear weight balance thanks to its ‘front midship’ engine location while its long wheelbase and wide front and rear track adds to the car’s overall handling stability.

The fully independent suspension uses lightweight aluminium components to reduce weight as much as possible. With a racing-inspired double wishbone set up at the front, a multi-link arrangement mounted on a subframe behind and an extremely rigid bodyshell, the G37 feels agile and surefooted with a refined ride.

Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) helps to enhance vehicle stability under a variety of driving conditions.

Power-assisted 4-wheel vented disc brakes have a 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The power steering system is a vehicle-speed-sensing type with a twin-orifice structure, which provides optimum steering effort at both high and low vehicle speeds.

Standard equipment

G37 Sedan has a full complement of user friendly and above all, useful, standard equipment.

Standard features include the Infiniti Intelligent Key with smart access and push button starter, a s 6-CD, ten-speaker Bose® premium audio system with MP3 playback and an auxiliary-in audio jack socket. The Infiniti Intelligent Key also incorporates memory positions for driver’s seat, steering wheel column and door mirrors. Bluetooth® phone connectivity (when specified as an optional extra) and cruise control can all be operated via switches on the leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel.

Other features include power seats (with eight way adjustment on both the driver and passenger sides), auto-dimming rear view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels, six airbags and integrated fog lamps. For the perfect driving position, the binnacle is attached not to the dashboard but to the steering column itself, and moves with the wheel when the latter is adjusted for reach and rake.

A custom-engineered Bose® Audio system sets a new standard for stereo performance in a car. Its 10 high-performance speakers provide crisp musical detail, with impactful low notes bringing G37 owners closer to the power and emotion of a live concert performance.

To achieve this, Bose® engineers used proprietary digital signal processing and multiple channels of custom equalization to help tune the sound specifically for the vehicle.

Safety

High levels of passive safety were a priority at the design stage. As a result, the G37 has a full complement of six airbags, with dual-stage front airbags, seat belt sensors and passenger seat occupancy sensor.

Quality

Infiniti is synonymous with vehicle quality, and that’s something that doesn’t happen by accident.

On the Tochigi production line in Japan every vehicle – not just every tenth vehicle – is laser scanned to ensure that panel gaps are within prescribed limits.

During the design and development phase, new models are exhaustively tested not just at Infiniti’s Hokkaido proving ground but also at the Tochigi and Motegi test and race complexes in Japan. Infiniti also has a vast 12.34 million square metre hot weather testing base in Arizona, USA.

Testing every Infiniti in the harshest of conditions and over thousands and thousands of kilometres ensures the durability and peace of mind that buyers can expect from the products.

Conclusion

Thanks to its power output alone – a figure way above other manufacturer entry points – the G37 sedan will continue to keep ahead of the establishment. But performance is only part of a story which includes a roomy interior, a long standard equipment list, excellent driving dynamics and sophisticated looks.

“The Infiniti G37 has the style, performance, quality and the equipment expected from a car in its class, but with the added bonus of exclusivity. This latest G37 Sedan is sure to attract even more customers to the brand,” says Abhijeet Pandit.

Limited Edition Worldwide First Car Serial- NO. 01 Available In Dubai At Hamann

German tuning house Hamann Motorsport has just released details of its new Imperator tuning package for the Bentley Continental GT and Speed models.

German tuning house Hamann Motorsport has just released details of its new Imperator tuning package for the Bentley Continental GT and Speed models.

The package includes a complex wide body kit made up of 16 pieces, including a front bumper with two LED daytime running lights, side skirts, a new rear bumper and diffuser, a rear spoiler and an eight-piece fender flare kit.

Hamann engineers also set about to match the looks of the Imperator with some serious performance, which isn’t hard when you’re working with a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine. Thanks to an ECU tune as well as a new exhaust system (including high flow catalytic converters, an x-pipe and new mufflers) the GT model gets a boost from 560hp to 630hp at 6100 rpm and torque rises from 479 ft-lbs to 553 ftlbs at 1600 rpm.

The power increase for the GT Speed raises it’s already impressive numbers into supercar territory with 650hp (up from 610hp) and 612 ft-lbs of torque ( up from 553 ft-lbs) at just 1600 rpm

The Imperator kit also includes a new control unit for the Bentley air ride suspension that lowers the front of the car by 30mm and the rear by 20mm, helping it handle better and look meaner on a nice set of Hamann wheels.

Hamann offers its motorsports inspired Edition Race wheels in a 21×10.5-inch fitment front and rear with 295/30/21 tires. This setup does, however, require 5mm wheel spacers (included).

For an even more extreme look (and why not?), Hamman also offers a new wheel, the Anniversary Race, in a 22-inch setup. This setup comes in a 22×10.5-inch front and 22×11-inch rear fitment with 265/35/22 front tires and 305/30/22 rear tires.

As always, Hamann will craft whatever interior the customer wants. The company also offers a standard silver clear-coated carbon fiber accessory kit with 10 pieces including the center console, center stack, gauge surrounds, passenger dash insert, door inserts, ashtray covers, shift knob and paddle shifters.

An aluminum pedal set and sport steering wheel are also available for the Continental GT and GT Speed. Hamann has already produced one of the limited edition Imperator models and it is currently on sale at the company’s Dubai offices

http://www.autotraderuae.com/auto/index.php?carnews=1203

2009 GMC Sierra Denali: Unmatched Luxury And Performance In Unique Harmony

The unique Sierra Denali is a luxury pick up that fuses performance, utility and unmatched luxury and it is set to go on sale

The unique Sierra Denali is a luxury pick up that fuses performance, utility and unmatched luxury and it is set to go on sale in the Middle East next month. The 2009 Sierra Denali is truly distinct, with features that elevate its performance and design, such as a 6.2-litre, all-aluminium V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT), pumping out 441 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This luxury pick up will be on display at the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show this December.

The Sierra Denali also offers a unique combination of interior style and luxury, including standard nuance-leather covered front and rear seats, with heated and cooled, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, as well as leather trim throughout. A Denali-exclusive leather-wrapped steering wheel, which features a wood trim and a host of auxiliary controls, is standard. Denali models also feature a unique centre console, enhanced interior brightwork and detailed, highly finished embossed sill plates that greet passengers when they open any of the Denali’s 4 doors.

The unique centre console has wood grain trim that conceals the lid and cup holder pockets, continuing the interior’s refined appearance. In addition to a full complement of standard features, the Denali offers amenities such as an available heated steering wheel and heated and cooled seats. Interior colours include all-Ebony and an exclusive Cocoa/Light Cashmere combination.

Standard features include Bluetooth phone connectivity; rollover-capable head curtain air bags, power-adjustable pedals, electrochromic (auto-dimming) inside mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing automatic windscreen wipers, a segment exclusive remote starting system, EZ Lift Tailgate and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist.

In terms of entertainment, the model comes standard with an AM/FM MP3-capable stereo with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, Bose premium speaker sound system, rear-seat audio, power-sliding rear window, navigation radio system, power sunroof and an available DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system.

The Sierra Denali was designed with a strong and refined appearance befitting GMC’s professional grade philosophy, including muscular character lines and a bold stance. The front-end appearance is unique. A “centre-focused” bonnet, which flows outward to meet the front fenders and stamped-in rear-wheel flares, enhances this rugged look.

The Sierra Denali is offered in all-wheel drive configurations, powered by a 6.2-litre V8 engine, rated at 441 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 454Nm @ 4,400 rpm. This engine is paired with the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox has a wide overall ratio, including two overdrive gears, that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel efficiency. In fact, the Denali boasts efficiency that is best in its segment.

Also, the 6L80 has Driver Shift Control, a “tap up/tap down” capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts. Not only does this provide a smoother drive in the Sierra Denali, but it gives excellent fuel efficiency that belies a pick up of its size and features.

The Denali also features a 9.5-inch rear axle for two-wheel drive models, and an 8.6-inch rear axle for all-wheel drive models, with 3.42 gears and a locking rear differential. The specially tuned Z60 suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, StabiliTrak, skid plates and tow hooks are standard.

The Sierra Denali delivers stability and driving confidence from a boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Five suspension systems are available, each tailored to suit specific driving. GM's sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system comes as standard and helps mitigate the occurrence of rollover events, and is another segment exclusive. Paired with an improved, high-capacity brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability.

20-inch factory-installed chrome-finish aluminium wheels come standard and feature a design that is unique to the Denali.

GMC’s DNA is evident with the distinctive, Denali-specific front end, with its unique chrome grille, which is complemented by large, jewelled-appearance headlamps. The look of the front end, bumpers, lamps and rear box design are unique to the GMC brand. Other exterior features include a colour-keyed front air dam, chrome bodyside mouldings and power heated and auto-dimming wing mirrors.

Porsche Presents First Photos of Four-Door Panamera Gran Turismo

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has disclosed the first official photos of the Panamera in its final look

Stuttgart. About three-quarters of a year prior to the actual market launch, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has disclosed the first official photos of the Panamera in its final look. In its design, profile and silhouette, Porsche’s unique four-seater stands out clearly as a new member of the Porsche family. Conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, the Panamera combines numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a generous and variable interior, and the supreme driving comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the Cayenne Sports Utility, the Panamera is Por-sche’s fourth model series.

The designers of the Panamera have succeeded in positioning this unique car as a brand-new and truly different model while nevertheless retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions alone, the Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment: measuring 1931 mm or 76.0” in width, the Panamera is wider, and measuring 1418 mm or 55.8” in height, lower than comparable four-door models.

The unmistakable, sleek GT silhouette is created by the car’s overall length of 4970 mm or 195.7” and short, sporting overhangs front and rear. In its styling and details, the Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented also on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne.

Through its design language alone, the Panamera will establish a new segment versus the competition. The symbiosis of sports car DNA derived from the looks of a coupé, the unique interpretation of the classical saloon body and the benefits of a variable space concept give the new Porsche its truly unmistakable appearance. As an example, the Panamera comes with highly individual, strongly contoured air in-takes instead of a conventional radiator grille.

Striking wheel arches and the long and sleek engine compartment lid create that typical 911 “landscape” at the front end of the car the Porsche customer has appreciated for no less than 45 years, with the distinctly contoured wings as flanks bordering on the flat front lid. The V-shaped seams along the engine compartment lid and the rear window tapering out like an arrow to the rear convey the features characteristic of a sports car to the new, highly individual Panamera class. The striking, muscular shoulders over the rear wheels, the dynamic sweep of the coupé-like roofline, and the visible tailpipes again bear out all the DNA so typical of a thoroughbred Porsche.

The elegant roof arch extends stylishly over the generous interior, simply begging the beholder to get inside. Like all Porsche models, the Panamera is oriented in every respect to the needs and wishes of the driver. But now, thanks to the new concept of space and the sporting architecture of the interior, the car’s occupants are also able to experience this special “pilot feeling” on all four seats.

All four occupants enjoy supreme ergonomic comfort on both the front seats and the two firmly contoured single seats at the rear. The luggage compartment easily takes up all the passengers’ luggage, the variable space concept with its folding rear seat backrests enabling the driver and passengers to adjust the luggage space individually to their personal requirements. And last but not least, the coupé tailgate in the sporting rear end combines superior suitability for daily use with stylish ele-gance.

Porsche has developed superior and up-to-date power units for the Panamera again reflecting all the qualities typical of the brand – the V-engines within the engine compartment come with six and eight cylinders and range in power from 300 to 500 bhp. Some of the engines use turbocharger technology, Direct Fuel Injection making them both fuel-efficient and powerful all in one. The flow of power to the wheels goes either through a manual six-speed gearbox or Porsche’s seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or Double-Clutch Gearbox.

In addition to sporting rear-wheel drive, the top version of the Panamera comes with even more sophisticated all-wheel drive, which is also available for the other versions as an option. As a further highlight, Porsche is preparing a particularly fuel-efficient version of the Panamera with hybrid drive. Further details on the engines, transmissions, performance, prices and equipment will be disclosed next spring.

The Porsche Panamera will be built at Porsche’s Leipzig Plant, where a production hall measuring some 22,000 square metres or almost 237,000 square feet and a lo-gistics centre are currently under construction. While the engines featured in the Panamera are built at Porsche’s Main Plant in Zuffenhausen, the painted bodyshells will be supplied by the Volkswagen Plant in Hanover.

The Leipzig Plant will then assemble the Panamera for final delivery, with an annual sales target of some 20,000 units. Porsche is once again cooperating largely with German suppliers in the production of the Panamera, with some 70 per cent of the car’s overall value being created domestically. Hence, the Panamera is most definitely a car “Made in Germany”.

The Panamera will be making its world debut in spring 2009 and the first models will be at dealers worldwide in late summer of next year.

Read more:

Porsche Carrera S by Bo Zolland
Porsche Mobil1 Supercup preview
The Sports Outfit for the New Porsche Boxster

Exotic Car Rentals

In the United States, most rental cars exist to get you from point A to point B. Peter Schroeder, a German CEO who on a recent business trip to Los Angeles couldn't secure a car with navigation unless it was dubbed a "luxury" car.

Farhad Heydari and Jessica Thom

Where to rent the world's most expensive autos

Flanked by gently swaying carpets of native grasses, you accelerate onto the A48. You’ve just left the historic town of Cardiff, and are ready for some relaxation after a day of exploring the waterfront and the town’s 2,000-year-old castle. It’s early autumn in the picturesque Welsh countryside, and the roof on your Aston Martin DB9 Volante is down, making the howling of the massive 6.0 litre V12 engine even easier to enjoy.

Perhaps more stunning than the bucolic surroundings is the fact that this 450-horsepower, 186-mph handmade brute isn't even yours. It's a rental—yours for just $1,111 per day.

Welcome to the rarefied world of rentable exotica, an infinitesimal portion of the highly competitive $21.5 billion-per-year rental car industry, where virtually any über-upscale car manufactured for sale is also available to rent—for business, leisure or both. But not to everyone, and for a price.

"A general rule of thumb for exotic car rentals is to price the daily rental at one percent of the sticker price of the vehicle," says Chris Brown, managing editor at the trade publication Auto Rental News. "So, a Lamborghini Gallardo can rent from $1,600 to $2,500 a day depending on the area, and a Ferrari 360 Modena can run you about $1,000. Porsches will rent for less, but we don't keep overall statistics on exotics as it is such a specialty market."

In Pictures: Exotic Car Rentals

In Pictures: 15 Awesome Autumn Drives

In Pictures: World's Greatest Coastal Drives

In Pictures: 10 Cool Driving Schools

In Pictures: Follow Your Passion Vacations

In fact, according to the American Car Rental Association, these top-of-the-line and exotic vehicles represent such a tiny fraction of the millions of rentals each year that the ACRA doesn't even keep track of such statistics, saying they are far too minute.

In the U.S. the trend of renting upper-echelon automobiles exploded along with the burgeoning disposable incomes of young dot-commers. But in Europe, it's been happening for years, according to Graziella Zanoletti, president of Geneva-based Elite Rent-a-Car, whose 21-year-old company is among the oldest in the field.

"This is really not new here," she says of her firm, which throughout the years has outfitted vehicles for the likes George Soros, Bill Gates, Richard Gere, the Ruler of Dubai Sheik Mohammed Al Maktoum and the recently deceased Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates.

In the United States, most rental cars exist to get you from point A to point B. Peter Schroeder, a German CEO who on a recent business trip to Los Angeles couldn't secure a car with navigation unless it was dubbed a "luxury" car. "It was crazy," he says.

New Cruise Ports

10 Most Beautiful Skydives

Best Guided City Walks

These cars are different. With an average cost well into six figures, these are the very crème de la crème of the automotive world; they come with virtually every gadget and gizmo and can be had for a price—and with more than a few restrictions and requirements.

In Europe, for example, Sixt, an ever-expanding German-based agency, rents the blistering 12-cylinder Mercedes Benz S600, but not to those under 30 and only if they've had a driver's license for three years. Furthermore, two credit cards are required as part of the security deposit, and you can't take the vehicle to countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and others, for fear that they might end up on the black market—or in a chop shop—somewhere in the Ukraine or Moldova.

Similarly, when you rent an Audi A8 Quattro or Mercedes SL500 from Auto Europe, you may not drive it to "Eastern Europe," according to a spokesperson. For most, however, these limitations are few and who, after all, wants to drive to Bulgaria when you can thrash about along the high-wire blacktop connecting Cinque Terre?

In fact, an informal and decidedly unscientific survey found that most people rent these cars do so for the self-indulgent pursuit of being seen—especially in their local haunts or by people whom they are trying to impress, say business associates. Either that or because they've dreamed up a special weekend getaway for someone they're with or wishing to court.

Other, more-pragmatic types, according to New York City-based Gotham Dream Cars' CEO Noah Lehmann-Haupt, rent before deciding whether to purchase. "A large portion of our customers, in addition to those who rent for fun and those who get gift certificates for a spouse or loved one, are people who are actually considering buying these supercars," he says. "And since most dealerships won't allow extended test drives, our customers prefer spending a few thousand dollars before putting down $200,000."

Their choices? Anything from the fiery Ferrari F430 to the dignified Rolls-Royce Phantom, which comes with a chauffeur. The price for all this indulgence? From $1,750 for a day in the Ferrari. Or the Rolls Royce "Roller," offered through the Madison Chauffer Service, which costs $5,400 for 12 hours.

For sheer beauty, few if any locales can beat the Côte d'Azur. At Elite Rent-a-Car's Monaco branch, one of more than 12 locations the 21-year-old company has throughout Europe, you can get behind the wheel of the Lamborgini Gallardo Spyder or one of two sharp-suited, full-size SUVs, like the Porsche Cayenne S or the Range Rover HSE, and head for route D2566, a stunning ribbon of asphalt high in the Maritime Alps that stretches from Monte Carlo to the Col de Turini. If that's too far south, ask for the Bentley Continental GTC at Excellence Luxury's Paris office and head to Alsace and the stunning Route du Vin.

But according to Zanoletti, president of Elite Rent-a-Car, a luxury rental is more than the car. "A top rental is more like a personalized service. You could be driving away with anything from a Mini Cooper S or the MG 55 or the Range Rover Sport," she says. "What really makes the difference is the customized service, be it door-to-door delivery, 24-hour on-call reservations or whether the fleet has something that sets it apart."

These four-wheeled beauties aren't limited to those living or traveling to Europe and the U.S. In Melbourne, Australia, Sports Car World Rentals offers a Ferrari 430 Spider and a Lotus Elise, while across town Exotic Car Rentals serves up a roster of Porsche 911s.

Or, perhaps an exotica from yesteryear is more your speed. The Historic & Classic-car Hirers Guild (HCHG), the largest purveyor of classic cars in Britain, offers motoring enthusiasts an Aston Martin DB6 (James Bond's car in Thunderball), a 1972 and 1979 Rolls, a 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV, a 1933 MG J2 convertible and a Jaguar E-type.

Cars Go Small In Paris

Auto shows tend to be a platform for glitz, glamor, stunning designs and new levels of excess

Javier Espinoza

PARIS - Auto shows tend to be a platform for glitz, glamor, stunning designs and new levels of excess, but that's all changing as carmakers struggle with the rising cost of credit that is blighting their customers.

At the Paris Auto Show this weekend, European automakers are set to put on a brave face and strut small, fuel-efficient models as their answer to the growing problem of frozen credit markets.

"We will see a trend for smaller and more fuel-efficient cars," said Michael Tyndall, an industry analyst with Nomura International in London. "The upcoming EU legislation on a limit to C02 emissions, the demand from consumers for fuel-efficient cars and the fact the being green is seen as cool, are all contributing factors for the manufacturing of new cars."

In Pictures: Highest-Quality Small Cars
Best Small Cars For The Buck
In Pictures: 10 Diesel Cars We'll Soon Be Driving
In Depth: Safest 2008 Luxury Cars
In Depth: World's Cheapest Cars

Perhaps the biggest problem is that consumers in one of the biggest markets for European carmakers--the United States--are increasingly unable to access the credit they need to purchase new vehicle.

American auto sales in September fell by as much as 36.8%, for some major carmakers. Overall, the industry sold only 964,873 vehicles, a 26.6% slide from a year earlier and its biggest percentage drop in 17 years, Autodata said Wednesday, although European automakers were not amongst the biggest eight decliners, topped by Nissan, Mazda and Ford Motor.

A key model that will illustrate the green push in Paris this weekend will be Citroen's fuel-efficient, Picasso C3, a 13.4-ft car that is designed to be “small outside, big inside." "Car manufacturers need to create the miracle of providing enough space to drivers but at the same time keep the trend for smaller and fuel-efficient cars, and the C3 gets very close to doing this," Tyndall said.

Jaguar C-XF - best at Detroit Auto Show
The World's Top Car-Owning Countries
The World's Cleanest Cars?

But not everyone will be going small this weekend. Design will also be a key theme during the launch of new models this year with large, premium models like the BMW 7 series. The next-generation car by Bayerische Motoren Werke has been praised as one of the best designs for 2009, being 121 pounds lighter, yet slightly larger and wider than previous models, and sportier too.

Catering to the need for speed will be the Ferrari California V8, a highlight of the Paris Show, with its 4.3 liter V8 engine, and one of the fastest commercial vehicles on display.

All these new technologies are fascinating, said Ulrich Horstmann, an analyst with Bayerische Landesbank, but automakers are not all keeping up with the times or production. "By the time these vehicles are ready, consumer demands would have shifted. And car companies are not keeping up with the current demand for hybrid cars."

The Paris Auto Show, which is open to the public from Oct. 4-19, may manage to impress particpants with its cutting-edge technologies and designs, but carmakers will also have to consider the economic reality of consumers in Europe and North America if they want to strike the right chord.

A strengthening euro had previously been a bane to European carmakers, but the lack of access to credit has now added to their problems, and it seems to have hurt their American counterparts even more. (See "Credit Crunch Hits European Autos" and "Carmakers In The Credit Coalmine.")

The World's Cleanest Cars?

Cars are much more environmentally friendly than gas-powered cars, as they can reduce carbon emissions by 10% to 20% (or more).

Jacqueline Mitchell

Earlier this month, as oil prices rose and car buyers ignored big trucks and SUVs in favor of small cars, Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens called on the U.S. government to chip away at the country's dependence on foreign oil, in part, by having America's cars run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

While Pickens is heavily invested in natural gas, and stands to gain from such a switch, it isn't just about money for him or for consumers. Although it's a lot cheaper to fill up the tank of a CNG vehicle, auto analysts say, CNG cars are much more environmentally friendly than gas-powered cars, as they can reduce carbon emissions by 10% to 20% (or more).

But is refueling your car at home by tapping into your house's existing natural gas line a mere pipe dream?

Not for some motorists in New York and California, the only two states where the CNG-powered Honda Civic GX is sold. The car costs about $5,000 more than the gas-powered Civic but gets roughly the same mileage (28 mpg) on a fuel that costs significantly less than regular gas. That's on top of several thousand dollars in tax rebates granted buyers of the car (these are similar to the rebates provided to owners of fuel-efficient hybrids).

In Pictures: The World's Cleanest Cars?
In Pictures: Cars Of The Future
In Pictures: Hardest-To-Get Cars
In Pictures: Top 20 Most Dangerous Vehicles
In Pictures: Safest Cars Under $30,000

A GX driver who stops at a CNG-equipped gas station will pay roughly $1 less per gallon of fuel. But the GX also comes with Phill, a home-refueling appliance that mounts on a garage wall and taps into the existing home gas supply line for significantly cheaper, overnight fill-ups. The GX can go about 200 to 225 miles before it needs refueling, according to Honda.

In a sense, the GX's appeal may signal a bit of history repeating. U.S. automakers, including General Motors and Ford Motor, actively produced CNG-powered cars for consumers--as well as buses, taxis and fleet vehicles--until the 1990s, when all but Honda pulled out of the market as oil prices plummeted. Even as prices rose above $2 per gallon in early 2005, few stopped to think that there was an alternative to regular gas.

Honda only made the GX available to consumers two years ago, and even though the car is in high demand now (Honda can't build them fast enough), it's hard to say for certain that CNG cars could become common on American roads.

"We have become too comfortable driving on gasoline," says Ron Cogan, publisher of Green Car Journal Online, which focuses on cars' environmental performance. "We need new answers because we are past the tipping point," he says, pointing to Ford's recent announcement that it is moving away from manufacturing large cars and bringing smaller models over from Europe. "Ford's accelerated program to make more small cars is not just about market share, it is a survival measure."

Europe: Ahead Of The Pace

Natural-gas vehicles (NGVs), while struggling to make headway in the U.S. market beyond California and New York, are popular in Europe, primarily in Italy and Germany, where car buyers have several models to choose from, such as the Ford Focus and Opel Zafiria.

Ford of Europe builds a bi-fuel Ford Focus--available in Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden--that uses gasoline or diesel in one tank and CNG or liquefied petroleum gas in the other tank. (The LPG version is sold in the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy). There is a control on the instrument panel that allows drivers to switch between gasoline and natural gas. This car costs $2,500 to $3,000 more than the gas-powered Focus, but it has a driving range of 186.4 miles in CNG and 435 miles in gasoline.

Similarly, Mercedes-Benz makes a bi-fuel B170 Blue Efficiency sedan that it says reduces fuel cost per one kilometer (.62 miles) by 50%. It gets 186 miles on the NGV tank and a total of 621 miles when used in combination with the regular gas tank.

The World's Fastest Cars
Top 20 Most Dangerous Vehicles
Ten Cars Not Sold In The U.S.

The key benefit from natural gas is that it burns cleaner and reduces oil dependency.

"But it is a niche solution," says Adrian Schmitz, a Ford of Europe spokesman based in Germany. "It is one part of a broad portfolio of solutions." Schmitz says 50% of vehicles sold in Europe are diesels, which offer the same environmental benefits as CNG.

Conversion kits, which can be bought for making a car a bi-fuel like the Focus or the Blue Efficiency, are available in Europe and other countries like Asia, but not in the U.S.--Honda's Civic GX is the only game in town.

Unfairly Ignored?

Despite the relative success of bi-fuel cars in Europe, it's tough to say that NGVs could break through in the U.S. There are plenty of skeptics.

"In the beauty pageant of alternative fuel, natural gas vehicles may have gotten Miss Congeniality in all of this. It just wasn't sexy and it might have been overlooked," says Bill Reinert, national manager of advanced technology vehicles for Toyota Motor Sales. Reinert, along with other skeptics of CNG, says a lot has to happen before automakers will begin to invest money and resources to develop new NGVs.

Among the biggest challenges is infrastructure. There are 800 to 1,000 natural-gas stations in the U.S., compared with 175,000 regular gas stations, points out Cogan. This makes it inconvenient--perhaps impossible--to refuel a CNG-powered car on a long trip. Also, a CNG tank and components require a larger area of a vehicle. Motorists will sacrifice trunk and interior seating space to accommodate the system.

Do you think natural gas is the future of American cars? Why or why not? Add your thoughts in the Reader Comments section below.

"Americans have not shown a willingness to give up anything for fuel economy," says Philip Gott, director of automotive consulting at market research company Global Insight. He points out that NGVs require a change in lifestyle, such as taking time to make sure the car is refueling overnight and giving up trunk space to get even better fuel economy--things that American drivers might not want to do.

Because of these factors, and despite the benefits, CNG-powered cars represent a mere ripple in global automotive sales. For 2008, Gott is forecasting 300,000 worldwide sales of CNG-powered passenger cars and light trucks, compared with 72 million regular vehicles. And the vast majority of those 300,000 NGVs use some combination of gasoline or diesel and CNG--only a handful of cars operate on pure CNG like the Civic GX.

While the future of NGVs, in particular, is uncertain for now, the search for better ways to power cars will undoubtedly continue.

"It's natural to look at natural gas as a viable alternative," says Cogan, but "we have not found that one solution, so we have to look at all options."

The World's Top Car-Owning Countries

Despite its aggressive renewable energy policies, Europe's economy is getting more dependent on oil. The reason: cars.

William Pentland

Despite its aggressive renewable energy policies, Europe's economy is getting more dependent on oil. The reason: cars.

And Europe is hardly alone. Although industrialized nations have less than 20% of the world's population, they also have over 80% of the world's motor vehicles--cars and trucks.

Solar energy and wind power might be able to reverse the rise in electricity prices, but they won't put a dent in runaway oil prices. Cars and trucks run on gasoline and, barring a major technological breakthrough, will continue to do so no matter how much solar, wind or wave we can tap. In the meantime, where there are cars, there will be pain.

Case in point: Portugal. Slightly smaller than the state of Indiana, Portugal has more motor vehicles per capita--773 cars per 1,000 residents in 2006--than any other industrialized nation in the world, according to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

In Pictures: The World's Top Ten Car-Owning Countries
In Pictures: How To Drive Green Without Buying A New Car
In Pictures: The World's Cleanest Cars
In Pictures: Green Cars Of The Future
In Pictures: 10 Technologically Advanced Green Cars

In the past year, the sun-soaked country in southwestern Europe has spawned a new breed of bandit: the fuel thief. The preferred targets are semi-trucks with tanks that hold as much as 500 gallons of fuel, but regular cars and heavy machinery have also attracted their attention. Thefts have been reported in both urban and rural areas and black markets for diesel and gasoline have sprouted up all over the country.

If oil prices start rising again, Portugal's problem could easily become America's too. Until 2005, the United States boasted more motor vehicles than any other nation--total and per capita. Hardly a decade ago, the U.S. had more registered vehicles than registered drivers. Now the U.S. has the second-highest number of motor vehicles--which do not include mopeds or motorcycles--in the industrialized world. Although Americans own fewer vehicles than they once did, those vehicles need more gasoline than vehicles in any other industrialized economy do.

During the 1990s, sport utility vehicles grew faster than any other segment of the auto industry. By 1999, they accounted for nearly 10% of the entire U.S. vehicle fleet. And while SUVs use more fuel per mile than passenger cars, prior to the most recent spike in gas prices, Americans were driving them further distances than ever before, exacerbating the fuel-efficiency problem. The average American car travels more miles every year and gets fewer miles per gallons than cars in any other country of the 30 nations that belong to the OECD.

The World's Fastest Cars
Top 20 Most Dangerous Vehicles
Ten Cars Not Sold In The U.S.

At least Americans have an excuse. They live in a big country. The same can't be said for Luxembourg, which ranks fourth on our list. Slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island, Luxembourg has one airport, 100 miles of highways and more than 330,000 motor vehicles. Considering that Luxembourg has the second-highest gross domestic product per capita behind Qatar, it seems like the tiny country situated between Germany, France and Belgium has fewer cars than one might expect.

But then people buy cars for all sorts of reasons. The OECD's list of motor-vehicles owned per-capita shatters several notions explaining why people buy cars. For example, because more people own cars in rural areas than urban areas in the U.S., suburban sprawl is often considered the reason Americans rely so heavily on cars. This may be true in America, but not in Canada. Canadians log more miles behind the wheel per capita than all but three other countries--the U.S., Australia and Luxembourg. The majority of those miles are logged in urban rather than rural areas.

Although the rural-urban divide helps explain car ownership in the U.S. or Canada, in other places like Iceland, which has 719 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, it is statistically irrelevant. In Iceland, a person who lives in the city is as likely to own a car as someone who lives in the country.

Public transportation systems are not necessarily the panaceas they are made out to be. France claims one of the world's best public transportation systems. Paris has the second-busiest subway system in Europe after Moscow, carrying 1.365 billion passengers in 2005. And France has the most extensive high-speed rail network in the world. Despite spending vast sums on public transportation, France still has more cars than all but nine other industrialized countries.
