Ukraine: Orphanage shelled after being caught in crossfire

An investigation is underway after an orphanage was shelled during fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The home, near Slovyansk, was hit during clashes between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists.

No-one was killed or injured in the attack on the complex, which housed children with special needs.

Lubov Nazaryeva, the orphanage’s manager, admitted there were doubts over its future.

She added: 'What I mostly want now is for the war to be over. So that no one gets killed. It’s clear, that what happened here might be fixed. Someone will be held responsible, someone will do the renovation works.'

Oleksiy Dmytrashkivsky, spokesman for Ukraine’s anti-terrorist operation, said: 'There’s a commission working currently to investigate who destroyed the building and who was firing in this area. What I can say now is that there was a lot of crossfire and shooting by the terrorists. But I wouldn’t deny the Ukrainian side was firing at the terrorists.'
