DirectX 11.1 might not make it for Windows 7

DirectX 11.1 might not make it for Windows 7

Every new Windows version brings with it a fancy new DirectX update. With Windows 8, it's DirectX 11.1. Usually, Microsoft then ports the new update to its older Windows platforms, like it did for Windows Vista when Windows 7 came with bundled with DirectX 11.

But it seems that the new Direct 11.1 update will remain exclusive to Windows 8. In a Microsoft Answers forum, program manager Daniel Moth stated that, 'DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista, but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7.'

This is not a major concern for gamers, at the moment. DirectX 11.1 only features minor updates, and adds out-of-the-box stereoscopic 3D support. However, Microsoft could keep the next major DirectX upgrade tied to Windows 8, too, and with many reluctant to shift to the new operating system, this could be a major cause for worry for not only gamers, but also hardware manufacturers.

As a gamer, will you be updating to Windows 8 anytime soon?

Thanks, Neowin.
