Doctors threaten further strike action over new bylaw

Members of the Doctors Syndicate threatened to resume a general strike Tuesday if they are not allowed to review a new bylaw governing their salaries, promotions and terms of employment by the end of March. The group issued a statement saying, 'Doctors are afraid and anxious over the details of the bill. This is because it is the only bill being reviewed by the Health Ministry since other bills submitted by political parties, organizations and doctors were rejected.'The statement said doctors fear that the bill might not offer real reforms to better protect healthcare workers.'The bill which will be passed does not meet all the demands,' the group added. The Doctors Syndicate called on its members to attend a general assembly planned for 29 March, where the syndicate will vote on further strike action and a possible march starting in Dar al-Hekma to the Shura Councils offices to demand legislation that meets their demands for better pay and benefits.Syndicate members are also asking the healthcare budget get a boost.Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm
