Activists call for end to online censorship

An Egyptian group called for an online campaign Tuesday in support of greater internet freedoms, coinciding with the World Day Against Cyber Censorship. The campaign, which ends at midnight, aims to end to restrictions and censorship on the internet. In a Tuesday statement on its Facebook page, the Association for the Freedom of Thought and Expression said they had extended its call to global activists and organizations. The group said it will do its part by raising awareness on its blog and Facebook and Twitter accounts. The day was first marked 12 March 2008 by Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International.According to AFTE, “Everybody has the right to blog, write, communicate with anybody online ... express your opinion and access any content without facing censorship.”The groups supporters said censorship and content bans must end.'The internet is the virtual space where we try to achieve what we fail to do in reality. [No one] has the right to suppress our freedom in our own world,” posted one supporter identified as Ahmed Sayyed.Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm
