UK retailer Morrisons is predicting that Thursday the 28th April will be the busiest shopping day of the year so far. With 5.34pm being the time when cash registers will be ringing the loudest.
I get it! This is the equivalent of Royal Wedding Christmas Eve when those louche workers who weren’t buying into the big day suddenly catch the fever and go and buy anything they can lay their hands on. Or mothers who have bought everything they need weeks in advance but then think they need double the amount and panic buy extra before the shops shut!
Over Easter and in the run-up to the wedding, Morrisons is expecting to sell more than 90,000 bottles of Champagne, 1,060,000 paper cups and some 182,850 metres of bunting.

Although according to a survey this week of customers of the N&P (Norwich and Peterborough Building Society) three quarters of people (77%) have said they will not be buying any wedding merchandise, with one in five of those (22%) saying it is because money is tight at the moment. Almost half (46%) think it would just be a waste of money. While the vast majority of people are not looking to buy anything special, the small proportion who will buy something expect to spend under £10. Now, that’s not really getting into the spirit now is it?
I’m with Morrisons, I think there’ll be a huge last minute buy in. I am imagining the aisles being full of sweaty people wrestling over the last Union Jack flag and bottle of fizz. Pointy elbows pushing folks out of the way to grab the dwindling sausage rolls and paper plates. Brilliant!
Of course it doesn’t have to be that way – you could just admit you’re going to have a bit of a do and book your supermarket delivery slot now. Just make sure you stock up on the fancies and fripperies, otherwise I guarantee come 5.34pm on the 28th April you’ll be traipsing around looking for that last commemorative cup and cupcake and wishing you’d bought into this wedding stuff a lot earlier.
