The power of choice is as much of a curse as it is a blessing. It is a double-edged weapon which can either lead you to the right path or trick you into taking dreadful and regretful decisions. Life is an on-going cycle of tests which we all have to go through, and the decisions and choices we make are our only tools of success and survival.
You may not always be aware of it but every choice you make, no matter how small it may seem, significantly affects your life. Our everyday decisions shape our lives, and our everyday actions are baby steps towards our future.
Picking which college to go to, determining whether or not to apply for a certain job, saying no to going on a road trip with your friends (then regretting it later), deciding to snooze the alarm for an extra five minutes of sleep, and even choosing to eat an apple instead of a donut in the morning…all of these are inevitable, life-altering decisions (yes I’m also referring to the “apple VS donut” one!). All of these choices can and will change the course of a person’s day and whole life. And, unfortunately, most of the time, they are all taken for granted.
When it is decision time, you tend to either think too much into the matter or ignore the consequences. You either think too much into how going on this trip will affect your busy schedule or ignore the fact that sleeping for another five minutes, which is always more than just five minutes, might eventually cost you your job.
The point is, no matter what we decide, we have to take the responsibility of our own actions and accept the challenges and consequences of the choices we make. We have to wisely choose when to be spontaneous and when to be rationally careful and responsible.
One last thing…never ever regret the unchangeable past; never regret a decision or choice which you cannot undo because everything you have done has made you who you are now. You cannot control what already happened. What you can and should do is learn from your mistakes and try to control what’s to come.
