We’re surrounded by a huge amount of products that we simply know nothing about. We LOVE Pepsi but don’t know where the name came from, use Google everyday but never stopped to think where the name came from. If you're interested to find out, read on:


Adobe Systems was named after Adobe Creek in Los Altos, California (a river that ran behind one of the owners’ house).


CISCO is actually derived from the city name, San Francisco despite being confused as the acronym for ‘Computer Information System Company’. To avoid this misconception, one of the company leaders suggested they type it in lower case.


Google was once named ‘backrub’? It was created in 1996 under the name "BackRub" then changed to “Googol” in 1998 but was mistyped as “Google” when registered.


HP got its name from a coin toss. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Mercedes was originally named after Emil Jellineks’ daughter, Mercédès Jellinek. Emil Jellineks was the man who specified an engine designed by Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler that formally bore his daughter’s name.


Pepsi was commonly known as “Brad’s Drink” in 1893. It was named after the pharmacist who invented the soda Celeb Bradham. In 1898, Brad’s Drink was renamed "Pepsi-Cola" apparently due to digestive enzyme pepsin and kola nuts used in the formula.


• This giant brand was established under the name of Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation) in 1946. But the firm changed its name to “Sony” in 1958, an amalgamation of two words “sonus” and “sonny”. The English slang word "sonny" means smart, young and presentable.


• The famous electronics company, Sharp originated in Japan as the inventor of a mechanical pencil (the Ever -Sharp) in 1912. The company started selling radio sets after a huge earthquake hit Japan in 1923 and ever since has been manufacturing electronics.


• The name Starbucks comes from the famous novel Moby Dick. It started in 1971 as one shop in Seattle, and today Starbucks operate around 17,000 stores all over the world.


The Baskin Robins logo has a hidden number in it. The number “31” denotes for the availability of 31 basic flavors in all of their stores.
