A World Full Of Inventions
By: May Rostom
Most of us have gotten a good idea or two about something we wanted to create. It usually starts by facing a problem, then putting our thinking hats on to think of a solution, then ending in laziness or self-doubt. Well, below are a list of inventions that DID make it to the light of day just because someone followed through with their original thought.
• The first hard drive available for the Apple II had a capacity of only 5 megabytes.
• Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) had 1093 patents, making him one of the most well known inventors of all time. He invented more than 2,000 new products, including almost everything needed for us to use electricity in our homes: switches, fuses, sockets and meters.
• An airplane mechanic invented the Slinky while he was playing with engine parts and realized the possible secondary use for the springs.
• Bulletproof vests, windshield wipers, fire escapes, and laser printers were all invented by women.
• "The Webby Award" is the name of the award given to honor the best websites on the Internet.
• In 1875, the director of the United States Patent Office resigned and advised that his department be closed because he said “there was nothing left to invent”.
