Coffee vs. Depression in women

Coffee vs. Depression in women

By: May Rostom

According to a recent Harvard study carried out by Dr. Alberto Ascherio and Dr. Michel Lucas of Harvard University and his colleagues, women who drink four cups of coffee daily are 20% less likely to get depressed. Being a CNS stimulant; drinking coffee gives you energy and an over-all boost while stimulating brain receptors that are located at the Basal Ganglia.

The study was carried out on around 50,000 women (in their 60’s) where their coffee consumption was recorded and tracked over a ten year period. From 1996- 2006 almost 2500 cases were reported to experience depression, where the study concluded that depression risk decreases amongst women who drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day. When tested, decaf coffee didn’t have the same effect; apparently caffeine was responsible for the decreased numbers.

Caffeine is also known to improve memory, muscular recovery, and attention span. Of course this Harvard study (like any other study) isn’t definitive, and people with heart disease, mental/ psychological disorders, GIT problems, and some other illnesses are not allowed to consume so much coffee, but to those of you who are healthy, eating right, and taking care of yourself, rejoice; coffee is finally good for you.
