The Hangover Two..sued Twice

By: May Rostom

Warner Bros did not quite enjoy the $580 million success that The Hangover 2 achieved. Shortly before the movie was released, tattoo artist S. Victor Whitmill –who created Mike Tyson’s facial ink- tried to halt the movie’s debut and cash in a huge settlement payment, claiming he has copyrights on Tyson’s tattoo that Ed Helms fashioned in the movie. The court decided to allow the release of the film as scheduled and a trial has been set for February 21st, 2012.

A couple of months later, French luxury label Louis Vuitton also filed a suit against Warner Bros. in U.S. District Court in New York for using a fake LV bag in the movie. The fake bag was made by a company called Diophy which is also being sued for trademark infringement.

Warner bros are being sued by Louis Vuitton for using its trademark in the movie without permission, and for characterization of the bag as an authentic Louis Vuitton therefore “misleading the public about the source of the Diophy bag” and so undermining the labels efforts against counterfeit products. The luxury brand is requesting recall of all copies of the film containing the marks/ catchphrase –that Zach Galifianakis said, “careful, that is a Louis Vuitton”- and is also asking for triple damages on all profits WB may have made.
