The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) is due to announce new supply prices for cotton, maize, wheat and sugar cane, reported the local press.
The Ministries of Agriculture, Social Solidarity, Trade and Investment announce these prices before the start of every season, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The price of wheat which will be paid to farmers is expected to range between LE 240 and LE 270 per ardeb, cotton between LE 650 and LE 700 per quintar, mazie at LE 200 per ardeb and sugar cane between LE 2,250 and LE 250 per ton, Beltone Financial reported.
The President instructed the ministries to make sure the prices paid were enough to cover production costs and a reasonable profit margin. The government had been paying farmers to encourage them to plant important crops to ensure the availability of basic staples and reduce food imports.
